How to wash heavyweight (465 GSM) clothes without ruining them: The Ultimate Guide
You've just invested in a real sweatshirt. You're holding a 465 GSM (Grams per Square Meter) garment that weighs over a kilo, with a perfect Boxy Fit and structured cotton that feels like armor.
You put it on, it looks amazing, but then comes the dreaded moment: it needs washing. And panic sets in. "What if it shrinks? What if the hood loses its shape? What if it gets all pilled?"
At CUOTTI , we're experts in textile engineering. Washing heavyweight clothing (high-grammage cotton) isn't like washing a cheap €10 t-shirt from the supermarket. It requires respect. Here's the ultimate guide and the fatal mistakes you must avoid so your clothes last a lifetime.
❌ The 3 Deadly Mistakes (What you should NEVER do)
If you want to ruin a premium garment in record time, do any of these three things:
- 🔥 Public Enemy No. 1: Hot Water. Heavyweight cotton has very dense fibers. If you wash it at temperatures above 30°C, the fibers will shrink violently. Your oversized sweatshirt will suddenly become a child's size.
- 🌪️ The Dryer (Forbidden). Putting a 465 GSM garment in the dryer is a death sentence. The extreme heat will not only shrink the garment drastically, but it will also "cook" the fibers, making them rough and destroying the fabric's natural drape.
- 🧴 Excessive Fabric Softener. Ironically, fabric softener coats cotton fibers with a chemical layer that traps dirt and sweat over time. It also weighs down heavy fabrics, causing them to lose their boxy structure.
✅ The CUOTTI Protocol (How to wash it correctly)
Our CUOTTI garments are made with the highest quality pre-shrunk cotton, but to maintain that extreme weight intact, follow these 4 steps:
The Washing Ritual:
- 🔄 Step 1: Always inside out. Turn the garment inside out before putting it in the washing machine. This protects the outer color (especially deep blacks) from friction against the drum.
- 🧊 Step 2: Cold Water (20ºC - 30ºC Maximum). Select a wash cycle for delicate garments or cold cotton.
- 📉 Step 3: Low Spin. 465 GSM cotton retains a lot of water and is incredibly heavy when wet. If you spin at 1200 rpm, the force will deform the seams. Set your washing machine to 600-800 rpm maximum.
- 🌬️ Step 4: Dry flat (The ultimate trick). Never hang it on a hanger when it's wet; the weight of the water will inevitably stretch the shoulders and neck. Dry it lying flat on a clothesline or a clean towel in a shady area.
🤔 Why is CUOTTI's Heavyweight Clothing different?
It's important to note that not all heavyweight cottons are the same. At CUOTTI, our 465 GSM garments undergo a pre-washing and pre-shrinking process at the factory .
This means that the drastic shrinkage other brands experience (even when washing in cold water) has already been absorbed by us during production. If you follow this guide, your sweatshirt or pants will maintain their architectural boxy fit and premium texture wash after wash, year after year.
